Paul Schrader’s The Basics of Philosophy premiered in Venice, where its cast joined the director for an emotional standing ovation.
Paul Schrader’s The Basics of Philosophy made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 4, drawing a standing ovation and an emotional response from the veteran filmmaker.
A warm Venice reception
The drama screened out of competition at the festival’s Sala Grande. Variety measured the applause at roughly four and a half minutes, while The Hollywood Reporter described it as four minutes. Both accounts agreed on the evening’s central moment: Schrader grew visibly moved as the crowd rose and star Jack Huston applauded and embraced him.
Huston attended with fellow cast members Sofia Boutella, Bill Pullman, Dana Delany and Daniel Zovatto. Schrader, now 80, arrived with a film that returns to the themes of guilt, faith and moral reckoning that have shaped much of his work.
A professor forced to confront his past
The Basics of Philosophy stars Huston as John Jorissen, a professor at a small liberal arts college whose carefully controlled life hides a serious past transgression. When the person he wronged reappears, his intellectual certainties give way to an intensely personal confrontation with guilt and desire. Boutella plays Becca, his partner and colleague.
The ensemble also includes Shiloh Fernandez, Karl Glusman and Elizabeth Petruso. Martin Scorsese serves as an executive producer, extending a creative association with Schrader that reaches back to the screenplays for Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and The Last Temptation of Christ.
The premiere gives the film a prominent launch at one of the fall season’s most influential festivals, even as its difficult subject is likely to invite close scrutiny. No broad theatrical release date was included in the two premiere reports. For now, the Venice reception places Schrader’s latest character study firmly in the festival conversation. Its next test will be how buyers and audiences respond as the fall movie calendar takes shape.
