Jagex and Lyrical Animation are developing a RuneScape animated series with longtime player and creator Charlie White attached.

The fantasy world of RuneScape is being developed for television. Jagex and Lyrical Animation have begun work on an animated series inspired by the long-running online game, with creator Charlie “MoistCr1TiKaL” White joining the project through his Meatier Productions banner.

Gielinor is moving beyond games

Jagex chief executive Jon Bellamy announced the project at RuneFest in Birmingham following the Old School RuneScape keynote. The companies emphasized that development remains at an early stage, so no network, streaming platform, cast or release window has been named. More details are expected in 2027.

The adaptation is intended to explore Gielinor, the medieval fantasy setting where players build their own paths through quests, combat, exploration and cooperative adventures. That open-ended structure gives the producers a large amount of material, but it also leaves a central creative question unanswered: whether the show will follow recognizable game characters, invent a new ensemble or combine both approaches.

White brings a personal connection to the material. He said he has played RuneScape for 22 years, while Lyrical Animation creative director Daniel Dominguez highlighted the game’s mixture of humor and insight. Lyrical will produce with White’s company and Jagex, positioning the series as a collaboration between the rights holder, an animation studio and a creator with deep roots in the community.

A 25-year franchise looks for a new audience

Jagex first released RuneScape in 2001. The wider franchise now includes the original game, Old School RuneScape and RuneScape: Dragonwilds. The company says the games have generated more than 300 million player accounts and over $3 billion in lifetime revenue.

Those figures explain why an adaptation is attractive, but the cautious wording around the announcement is important. This is a development deal rather than a completed series order, and the creative team has not yet disclosed a story, format or destination.

For longtime players, the meaningful news is that Jagex is formally testing how its world can work as screen entertainment. For newcomers, the eventual series could offer a first trip into Gielinor without requiring hundreds of hours inside an online role-playing game.
