Skeet Ulrich says Billy Loomis lacks a natural path back to Scream without Melissa Barrera’s Sam Carpenter anchoring the character’s story.

Skeet Ulrich says his future in the Scream franchise is closely tied to Melissa Barrera’s character, making another appearance as Billy Loomis unlikely without her. The actor explained that Billy’s return in the recent sequels worked because he existed inside the story of Sam Carpenter, Billy’s daughter.

Billy Loomis returned through Sam’s story

Ulrich originated the role of Billy in the 1996 film, where the character was revealed as one of the killers behind the Ghostface mask. Decades later, he returned in the 2022 Scream and in Scream VI, appearing in visions experienced by Sam.

That device allowed the franchise to revisit Billy without undoing the original movie. It also made his appearances dependent on Sam’s emotional conflict and family history. Ulrich said filmmakers had discussed a three-film arc with him, but that plan did not reach its intended conclusion.

Barrera’s exit changed the creative path

Barrera left the franchise in 2023, and Sam was absent from the next installment. Ulrich’s view is straightforward: without Sam, there is no organic reason for Billy to appear inside another character’s mind. A return designed only as fan service could weaken the narrative logic that made his comeback work.

Ulrich stopped short of declaring that he could never appear again, but his comments set a clear creative condition. Any future use of Billy would need either Sam’s return or a new story device strong enough to justify revisiting the character.

The original film still follows him

The comments arrived as Ulrich reflected on the 30-year legacy of the first Scream. Despite the movie’s lasting influence, he said he has watched it only three times, most recently during a live commentary with co-star Matthew Lillard.

That distance makes his assessment of Billy’s future notable. Ulrich is not simply asking to rejoin a successful horror series; he is arguing that the role should remain connected to the story built around it. For now, that makes another Billy Loomis appearance possible in theory but unsupported by the franchise’s current direction.
