‘Slow Horses’ Season 6 Brings a Darker Turn and a Major Return

Slow Horses is preparing to return with a sixth season that pushes Apple TV’s spy drama into heavier emotional territory without abandoning the unruly team dynamic at its center. Director and executive producer Adam Randall described the new chapter as darker and weightier, while Gary Oldman indicated that the production still feels recognizably like the show viewers know.

A darker mission for Slough House

The season follows Jackson Lamb and the Slough House agents as they face the consequences of a plot aimed at destabilizing the country. This time, the danger includes two mysterious assassins and the return of Frank Harkness, played by Hugo Weaving. The story draws from two Mick Herron novels, Joe Country and Slough House, giving the adaptation more than one strand of the book series to weave together.

Randall said he was involved before the writers’ room and helped shape the story from an early stage. That creative runway allowed the season to build its darker mood around the characters rather than treating tone as a surface-level change. Oldman, who also serves as an executive producer, emphasized the collaborative structure behind the series and noted that its core group of creative producers has remained stable.

Sid Baker steps back into the story

The season’s most attention-grabbing return is Sid Baker, played by Olivia Cooke. Sid has been absent since the first season, leaving both the Slough House team and viewers with unresolved questions. Her reappearance connects the new episodes directly to the show’s earliest chapter and raises the stakes for River Cartwright and the agents who remember her.

Season 6 is set to premiere on Apple TV on September 16. The combination of an older mystery, a returning character and a more somber visual and emotional approach gives the series room to change its atmosphere while preserving the sharp ensemble chemistry that has defined it.
