Snoop Dogg Will Host the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards

Snoop Dogg will host the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, placing one of hip-hop’s most recognizable personalities at the center of the show as the VMAs return to the West Coast. MTV announced the appointment on Thursday, marking a new role in the rapper’s long history with the network and its annual awards.

The selection follows LL Cool J’s turn as host in New York last year. Deadline notes that the 2026 ceremony will be the first West Coast edition since 2017, making Snoop’s California identity part of the event’s broader homecoming.

A full-circle MTV assignment

In a statement reported by Rolling Stone, Snoop described MTV and the VMAs as part of his story from the beginning. He said the network gave hip-hop a place to be loud, fearless and visible to a mass audience, and framed the hosting job as a full-circle moment.

His connection to the ceremony stretches back more than three decades. Rolling Stone reports that Snoop first appeared on the VMAs stage in 1994. He later closed the 1999 show with Dr. Dre and Eminem, participated in a tribute to the Notorious B.I.G. and returned for a metaverse-inspired performance with Eminem.

Snoop has earned 13 VMA nominations and won three awards. That history gives the show a host who is not simply visiting the franchise for one night; he has watched its relationship with hip-hop evolve from the era of music television into today’s multiplatform culture.

What the host brings to the show

Snoop’s recent career has expanded well beyond recording, with television appearances, sports commentary, brand work and major live-event roles sharpening the relaxed on-camera style that made him a natural hosting choice. His ability to move between generations may also help the ceremony balance nostalgia with current pop and rap audiences.

The rapper said he will work with veteran MTV producer Van Toffler, another figure tied to the network’s earlier years. He promised memorable moments without revealing specific plans for the broadcast. Performances, presenters and any opening segment involving the host will become clearer as MTV completes the lineup, but the tone-setting role now belongs to Snoop Dogg.
