Steven Soderbergh will complete the final weeks of filming on The Batman Part II while Matt Reeves remains involved from a distance.

Steven Soderbergh is joining the final stretch of production on The Batman Part II, helping complete principal photography while director Matt Reeves remains away from the set for a family matter.

The unusual arrangement is designed to keep the DC Studios sequel moving without removing Reeves from the creative process. Deadline reported that Soderbergh will handle the remaining weeks of filming and stay in communication with Reeves, who is expected to resume control for post-production when he is ready. The Hollywood Reporter likewise said the two filmmakers will work together from a distance.

A carefully managed handoff

Soderbergh described Reeves’ work on the first film as intentional, specific and coherent. His task, he said in a statement reported by The Hollywood Reporter, is to capture material that fits seamlessly with footage already completed. That framing matters: this is not being presented as a wholesale creative reset or a permanent change at the top of the franchise.

Production had paused after Reeves stepped away to address the private family situation. The reports emphasize that Warner Bros. and DC Studios have rallied around the filmmaker, who remains closely associated with this corner of the DC universe after directing The Batman and helping shape its HBO spinoff, The Penguin.

What remains unchanged

Robert Pattinson is still set to return as Bruce Wayne. The sequel’s cast also includes Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The current theatrical release date is February 18, 2028.

Soderbergh brings extensive experience in fast, tightly controlled productions, but the reported collaboration is notable precisely because it aims to preserve Reeves’ established vision. For audiences, the key development is that filming can resume while Reeves receives the time and privacy he needs, with the finished movie still intended to remain his project through the final photography phase.
