Taylor Swift will receive the first VMA Artist Director Honors, recognizing a visual catalog that includes four Best Direction wins.

Taylor Swift is set to receive the inaugural Artist Director Honors at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, adding a new behind-the-camera distinction to her long awards history. MTV and CBS announced the honor ahead of the ceremony, which will air live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 27.

A new VMA focused on directing

The award was created to recognize recording artists whose work behind the camera has expanded music-video storytelling. Swift is its first recipient, with the organizers highlighting the sustained directorial voice she has developed across multiple eras of her career.

That body of work now includes videos for “The Fate of Ophelia,” “Opalite,” “The Man,” “cardigan,” “willow,” “Anti-Hero,” “Bejeweled,” “Lavender Haze,” “I Can See You,” “Karma” and “Fortnight.” She also directed the 2021 short film built around the 10-minute version of “All Too Well,” starring Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien.

The recognition is not her first directing success at the VMAs. Swift has been nominated seven times for Best Direction and has won that category four times. The new honor broadens that record by celebrating a larger body of visual work rather than a single video released during one eligibility period.

Swift joins a high-profile 2026 ceremony

The announcement places Swift among the central names attached to this year’s show. Madonna is scheduled to open the ceremony, returning to the VMAs stage for the first time since her widely remembered 2003 performance with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.

Other announced performers include Lisa, Shaboozey, Raye, Gunna, Sienna Spiro and Yung Lean. For Swift, however, the night will center on a part of her career that has grown steadily alongside her songwriting and performing: shaping the visual narratives that carry her songs beyond the recording studio.

The award also signals a wider shift in how the VMAs frame authorship. By creating a career-focused directing honor, the ceremony is formally recognizing artists who treat music videos as an ongoing creative practice, not only as promotional extensions of individual singles.
