Taylor Swift has entered the scientific record in an unexpected way. A newly described genus of Australian plant bugs has been named Swiftiephylus, while four species within it carry names inspired by the singer and her albums.

Four names turn the Swiftie connection into taxonomy

UC Riverside doctoral student Sarah Schroeder led the naming tribute as part of research describing 12 species previously unknown to science. The four Swift-inspired names are Swiftiephylus taylorae, Swiftiephylus amator, Swiftiephylus intrepidus and Swiftiephylus poetorum. The final three translate the ideas of lover, fearless and poets into Latin, connecting the classification to familiar chapters of Swift’s catalog.

The genus name combines “Swiftie,” the widely used name for Swift’s fans, with “Phylus,” a term common in the naming of this insect group. Schroeder said the tribute reflected her own history as a fan while giving her a way to draw attention to insect diversity and conservation.

The resemblance goes beyond wordplay. According to the university, the bugs are pale yellow with red accents, coloring that may help them blend into the red and orange flowers of Australian she-oaks. Schroeder linked that palette to Swift’s familiar blond-hair-and-red-lip look, calling the insects “blonde” in the research paper.

Old specimens receive new scientific identities

The insects are new to science, but not newly collected. Their specimens came from a major Australian biodiversity project conducted between 1995 and 2004. That effort gathered more than 50,000 specimens, leaving taxonomists with years of work to sort and formally describe the material.

Schroeder and UC Riverside professor Christiane Weirauch examined 593 borrowed specimens from the American Museum of Natural History and the Australian Museum. The newly classified insects belong to Miridae, the largest family of true bugs, which includes more than 11,000 described species.

They are closely associated with Australian she-oaks and are not known to harm the trees, people or animals. That distinction keeps the story focused on biodiversity rather than a celebrity-branded pest. By pairing Swift’s enormous cultural reach with painstaking museum research, the naming turns a highly technical scientific milestone into an accessible reminder that much of insect life remains undocumented.
