ABC will launch The Rookie Season 9 and spinoff The Rookie: North on January 6, creating a two-hour Wednesday night franchise block.

ABC is turning The Rookie into a two-hour Wednesday franchise block. Season 9 of the Nathan Fillion-led police drama will premiere January 6, 2027, at 9 p.m. ET, followed at 10 p.m. by the new spinoff The Rookie: North.

The scheduling announcement, unveiled around New York Comic Con, moves the original series to a new night and time while giving its expansion a direct lead-in. It is a familiar network strategy: viewers who return for the established show will immediately be introduced to a new story built around the same late-career law-enforcement premise.

Season 9 picks up from a dangerous cliffhanger

Early footage from the returning drama points directly back to the Season 8 finale. John Nolan and the team are shown trying to rescue Tim Bradford, whose kidnapping left the previous season unresolved. The preview raises the pressure around that search rather than offering a stand-alone reset for the January premiere.

The new season also adds several recognizable performers. Troian Bellisario is joining as a single mother beginning a law-enforcement career, while Dulé Hill will play a veteran officer. Molly Kunz is set to appear as an aspiring emergency medical technician. Returning cast members include Jenna Dewan, Eric Winter, Shawn Ashmore and Melissa O’Neil alongside Fillion.

Jay Ellis leads the franchise’s next chapter

The Rookie: North stars Jay Ellis as another person attempting to enter law enforcement later in life. That setup gives the spinoff a clear connection to the idea that launched the original series without simply transferring Nolan to a different city or unit.

Andy Allo is also part of the new cast as an emergency-room resident. Further character relationships and the precise degree of crossover between the two programs remain to be seen, but airing them back to back gives ABC an obvious opportunity for shared stories and guest appearances.

The January date also gives viewers time to catch up. The first eight seasons of The Rookie are available on Hulu and Disney+, according to the current rollout information. For the franchise, the bigger test begins on premiere night: whether an established audience will stay for a second hour and allow North to build an identity of its own.
