Shane Gillis dropped an uncensored F-bomb during a Dr. Seuss-inspired SNL sketch, then apologized as the cast worked the slip into the scene.

Shane Gillis created the most unpredictable moment of his latest Saturday Night Live hosting appearance when an uncensored expletive slipped out during a Dr. Seuss-inspired sketch. The mistake aired live, surprised the Studio 8H crowd and immediately became part of the comedy as Gillis and the cast tried to keep the scene moving.

A line flub changes the sketch

In the sketch, Gillis played Zachary, the defensive son of Mikey Day’s Cat in the Hat. Andrew Dismukes appeared as Sam-I-Am, repeatedly pressing the family to try green eggs and ham. While warning him to back off, Gillis stumbled over his line and let the F-word escape before abruptly covering his mouth.

His reaction made it clear that the language was not planned. After a brief pause, the audience erupted and Gillis fought through a smile as the performers returned to the script. Day then folded the accident into a later line, dismissing Zachary as someone who had said a bad word. Gillis acknowledged the jab without derailing the scene again.

The apology became part of the broadcast

Gillis addressed the incident twice. He offered a quick apology near the end of the sketch, then referred to it again during the closing curtain call before thanking the audience. Reports on the episode said the live broadcast and stream carried the uncensored word, while a social-media version posted afterward muted it. The recorded episode on Peacock initially retained the live audio.

The October 10 episode marked Gillis’ third time hosting the NBC show. His relationship with SNL has taken an unusual path: he was announced as a featured cast member in 2019 and removed before appearing, but later returned as a host in 2024 and 2025.

What could have been a tense production error instead became a display of live sketch comedy’s built-in risk. Gillis’ visible shock, the cast’s improvised callback and the end-of-show apology ensured that the unscripted few seconds generated more conversation than many carefully rehearsed punchlines.
