Blizzard has announced Diablo 5 for spring 2029, setting the action RPG about a century after Diablo 4 in a fallen, post-apocalyptic Sanctuary.
Blizzard Entertainment has officially announced Diablo 5, giving its long-running action role-playing franchise both a stark new premise and an unusually early release target. The next mainline game is scheduled for spring 2029.
The reveal came during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026 at the Anaheim Convention Center. Blizzard’s teaser moves the series roughly a century beyond the events of Diablo 4 and presents a world where Sanctuary has fallen.
Diablo 5 begins after evil has won
The setup reverses the usual heroic starting point. Instead of entering a threatened world that can still be saved, players will arrive after Diablo’s forces have prevailed in the conflict between good and evil. The Lord of Terror is also returning as the central presence in the new chapter.
A short announcement teaser showed angels being overwhelmed by Diablo’s forces, establishing the post-apocalyptic tone without revealing detailed gameplay systems. That makes the story direction clearer than the mechanical changes: Blizzard has explained the condition of the world, but many questions about classes, platforms and player progression remain open.
A three-year wait begins at BlizzCon
Announcing a spring 2029 target gives Blizzard a long runway between reveal and release. It also signals that the studio is ready to identify the franchise’s next numbered entry while Diablo 4 remains the current game.
The century-long time jump provides room to reshape familiar locations and conflicts without severing the series from its core mythology. It can preserve recognizable forces such as Diablo while allowing Sanctuary’s defeat to define a different kind of adventure.
For fans, the immediate news is concrete but deliberately limited. Diablo 5 is in development, the story takes place after a catastrophic victory for evil, and Blizzard is aiming for spring 2029. The longer wait now shifts attention toward future demonstrations, where the studio will need to show how that darker premise changes the experience of fighting back.
