Jessica Chastain Joins Netflix’s ‘The Retrievals’

Jessica Chastain is heading to Netflix for The Retrievals, a new drama inspired by the acclaimed podcast about patients at the Yale Fertility Center. The Oscar winner will star alongside Emilia Jones and Amy Ryan in a series that places friendship, accountability and the human cost of a medical scandal at the center of its story.

Chastain will play Kaitlyn Langford, a former art historian who has spent years undergoing unsuccessful fertility treatments. In the show’s premise, Kaitlyn discovers that she was among the patients affected by criminal drug diversion at the clinic. The revelation pushes her toward a personal reckoning and a central role in legal action against Yale.

A podcast becomes an ensemble drama

The series is based on The Retrievals, the podcast from The New York Times and Serial Productions written by Susan Burton. Its screen adaptation follows a community of IVF patients who unite after procedures in which they did not receive the pain relief they were supposed to get because fentanyl had been diverted and replaced with saline.

Jones is set to play another patient, Gabby Clemente. Ryan will portray Carla Russo, the nurse whose actions are central to the story. The casting gives the drama three distinct perspectives: patients confronting trauma, a legal fight for answers and the person responsible for the diversion.

The team behind the series

Molly Smith Metzler, whose credits include Maid and Sirens, is serving as showrunner, writer and executive producer. She said Chastain was the creative team’s model while the role of Kaitlyn was being developed, pointing to the actor’s ability to balance restraint with emotional intensity.

LuckyChap and Metzler’s Quiet Coyote are producing. Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, Dani Gorin, Colin McKenna, Caitlin Roper and Burton are among the executive producers. Lila Neugebauer will direct the pilot and also executive produce.

Netflix has not yet announced a release date. Even at this stage, the combination of Chastain’s casting, Metzler’s experience with character-driven drama and the podcast’s rigorous reporting gives The Retrievals a clear identity: a limited-scale human story with institutional stakes and a high-profile ensemble.
