Chris Brown receives an eight-month sentence, suspended for one year, after pleading guilty to affray in a 2023 London nightclub attack.
Chris Brown has received an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, after pleading guilty to affray over a 2023 attack at a London nightclub. The ruling at Southwark Crown Court means the R&B singer will not go to prison unless he commits another offense during the suspension period.
The case centered on an incident at Tape, a private members’ club in Mayfair, in February 2023. The court heard that Brown struck music producer Abraham Diaw with a heavy tequila bottle during a confrontation in the crowded venue. Diaw later received hospital treatment for injuries to his head and knee.
The court’s decision
Judge Tony Baumgartner described the violence as serious and dangerous, while also taking account of Brown’s guilty plea, his compliance with bail conditions and an assessment that his risk of reoffending was low. Brown and his co-defendant, rapper and vocal coach Omololu Akinlolu, were each ordered to pay £1,500 in costs.
Akinlolu, who also pleaded guilty to affray, received a four-month sentence suspended for 12 months. Prosecutors said he joined the confrontation after Brown’s initial use of the bottle. CCTV shown in court documented an incident lasting roughly 20 seconds inside the packed club.
What happens next
Brown had previously denied more serious counts involving assault, grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon. Those charges were later dropped after the affray pleas. His defense described the episode as brief and deeply regretted and presented an apology to people who were in the venue.
The sentence closes the criminal proceedings without immediate custody, but it leaves Brown under the terms of the suspension for the next year. The decision arrives as the 37-year-old artist remains one of contemporary R&B’s most commercially visible performers, making the legal outcome a significant development beyond the music industry.
