The Emmy Awards will move to Prime Video in 2027 under a six-year deal, with the main ceremony streaming free to viewers worldwide.
The Emmy Awards will leave traditional broadcast television for Prime Video beginning in 2027. The Television Academy announced a six-year agreement that gives the ceremony a permanent global streaming home after decades of rotating among ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC.
The ceremony will remain free to watch
Viewers will not need an Amazon Prime subscription to watch the main awards show. Prime Video plans to make the ceremony available live at no charge in more than 200 countries, giving the Emmys a wider international distribution footprint than the previous U.S. network arrangement.
The deal runs through six ceremonies, beginning with the 2027 telecast. Financial terms were not disclosed by the Television Academy, although trade reporting placed the annual rights fee well above the range associated with the previous broadcast rotation.
A long-running network system comes to an end
For years, the Primetime Emmys moved among the four major broadcast networks under an arrangement commonly known as the “wheel deal.” That system gave each network a turn but denied the awards a consistent home. Prime Video now gains the chance to develop a recognizable annual event and promote it to audiences worldwide.
The move also reflects the television industry the Emmys now celebrate. Streaming platforms have become central competitors in major categories, while viewers increasingly discover series outside fixed network schedules. Moving the ceremony online turns that shift into part of the event’s distribution strategy rather than simply a subject of the awards themselves.
Some details are still unresolved
The agreement covers the main Emmy ceremony, but the future home of the Creative Arts Emmys has not been clarified. Those presentations recognize many technical, guest-acting and craft categories and are typically held before the prime-time event.
The Academy has also suggested that Prime Video could carry additional programming during the partnership. For now, the clearest change is straightforward: starting in 2027, television’s best-known awards show will be streamed globally, free to viewers, from the platform that will serve as its exclusive home for six years.
