Harvey Weinstein received a 15-year New York prison sentence after his conviction for sexually assaulting former assistant Miriam Haley.
Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in New York after his conviction for sexually assaulting former production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006. The sentence was imposed Wednesday, September 23, adding another major ruling to a legal saga that helped reshape Hollywood and the wider conversation about abuse and accountability.
A sentence after a second conviction
A jury found Weinstein guilty last year of committing a criminal sexual act against Haley. During the sentencing hearing, Haley described the lasting damage caused by the assault. Weinstein, who appeared in court in a wheelchair, continued to deny the allegations while offering a broad apology to anyone he may have hurt through his actions.
The 74-year-old former producer has already spent years in custody while facing repeated proceedings in New York. He is currently being held in a prison ward at Bellevue Hospital, where he has received treatment for health problems reported during his incarceration.
The case returned after an overturned verdict
Wednesday’s punishment is the second sentence connected to Haley’s case. Weinstein was convicted in 2020 of assaulting Haley and raping actor Jessica Mann, but New York’s highest court overturned those convictions in 2024 after concluding that he had not received a fair trial. Prosecutors tried the case again, and the new jury convicted him on the Haley count.
The New York proceedings are separate from Weinstein’s conviction in Los Angeles on sex-crime charges. The latest sentence therefore does not erase his other legal exposure or the years he has already spent behind bars.
Weinstein was once among the most influential producers in the film industry through Miramax and The Weinstein Company. Reporting in 2017 brought forward allegations from numerous women and became a catalyst for the global #MeToo movement. This new sentence closes another phase of the New York case, although further legal challenges remain possible.
