Marg Helgenberger is joining Boston Blue Season 2 as Gwen Silver, the estranged biological mother of Maggie Lawson’s Sarah.

Marg Helgenberger is heading back to CBS in a recurring role on Season 2 of Boston Blue. The longtime CSI star will play Gwen Silver, the estranged biological mother of Sarah Silver, portrayed by Maggie Lawson.

A new complication for the Silver family

Gwen is described as charming, complex and unpredictable, with a temperament compared to the changing weather around her Cape Cod home. Her return to Boston comes with a personal and emotional agenda, placing fresh pressure on a relationship with the daughter she loves but from whom she has become distant.

The casting adds another branch to the show’s central family structure. Sarah serves as Boston’s superintendent of detectives. Her relatives include district attorney Mae Silver, played by Gloria Reuben; Baptist minister Ben Silver, played by Ernie Hudson; and patrol officer Jonah Silver, played by Marcus Scribner.

A familiar procedural face returns to CBS

Helgenberger is closely identified with CBS after playing forensic scientist Catherine Willows across the first 12 seasons of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. She later returned for the original series’ finale and appeared in the second and third seasons of CSI: Vegas. Her television résumé also includes China Beach, All Rise and Intelligence.

Boston Blue, a continuation of the Blue Bloods world, follows former NYPD officer Danny Reagan after he relocates to Boston and begins working with detective Lena Silver. Donnie Wahlberg and Sonequa Martin-Green lead the cast, while the series uses the Reagan and Silver families to connect police work with relationships outside the precinct.

Season 2 is scheduled to premiere Friday, October 9, at 10 p.m. on CBS. Helgenberger’s return also reconnects the network’s procedural lineup with one of the genre’s most recognizable performers. The network has not yet revealed how many episodes will feature her, but the recurring designation points to a storyline extending beyond a single guest appearance.
