Blizzard announced an animated Diablo series in development at Netflix, but the BlizzCon reveal included no cast, plot or release window.

Blizzard Entertainment is taking Diablo beyond games with a new animated series in development at Netflix. Blizzard president Johanna Faries announced the project during BlizzCon 2026 in Anaheim, confirming the partnership while leaving its creative team, story and release timing under wraps.

The series will be set in Sanctuary, the dark fantasy world at the heart of the franchise. Blizzard described the project as part of a wider effort to tell stories across new screens after decades of building large game universes.

Diablo begins its Netflix adaptation

Faries told the BlizzCon audience that she is a longtime Diablo player and is eager to see the world’s distinctive darkness translated into animation. The announcement did not include footage, episode details, casting or even a target year, signaling that the adaptation remains at an early stage.

That lack of specifics matters because “in development” does not mean the show is close to release. Netflix and Blizzard have confirmed the collaboration, but viewers do not yet know which period of the franchise’s history it will explore or whether familiar heroes and villains will appear.

The timing nevertheless gives the adaptation a substantial foundation. Diablo debuted in 1996 and has grown through multiple mainline games, expansions and the mobile title Diablo Immortal. Its mythology of angels, demons and the endangered human realm of Sanctuary offers a broad canvas for serialized storytelling.

Blizzard hints that more worlds could follow

The company presented the Diablo series as only the beginning of its current screen ambitions. Faries said discussions are also taking place around other Blizzard universes, including Overwatch and Warcraft, though no additional show was formally announced.

For Netflix, the project continues a strategy of adapting major game properties through animation. For Blizzard, it is a test of whether Sanctuary can reach audiences who may know the franchise’s imagery but have never played the games. Until the partners reveal a showrunner, plot or launch window, the confirmed news is the alliance itself—and a new animated path into Diablo’s world.
