Quentin Tarantino will write and direct a West End comedy starring Sacha Baron Cohen, opening at London’s Phoenix Theatre in March 2027.

Quentin Tarantino is taking his taste for sharp dialogue and unruly genre stories to the London stage. The filmmaker will write and direct The Popinjay Cavalier, a new West End comedy starring Sacha Baron Cohen, with previews scheduled to begin February 23, 2027.

The production will officially open March 18 at the Phoenix Theatre. It marks Tarantino’s first original stage play and a West End debut for both him and Baron Cohen, pairing two artists known for pushing comedy toward danger, confrontation and elaborate performance.

A swashbuckling comedy built for the stage

The announced synopsis describes the play as a comedy of deception and disguise inspired by classic swashbuckling adventures. Set in 1830s Europe, the story is designed as a celebration of theatrical romance filtered through Tarantino’s distinctive voice. Baron Cohen will play the title character, though further casting has not yet been announced.

Sonia Friedman Productions and Sony Pictures Entertainment are producing the show. Friedman’s company has extensive experience mounting major commercial theater, while Sony previously worked with Tarantino on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. That combination gives the project both a seasoned West End operation and an established creative relationship behind the scenes.

A new medium for a filmmaker between movies

Tarantino has spoken before about turning his attention to theater, but the venue, star and performance dates make this plan concrete. He has acted onstage in the past, yet writing and directing a full West End production puts him in a different creative position. The live format will test how his long scenes, verbal tension and bursts of comedy work without editing or multiple takes.

Baron Cohen is an especially fitting lead for that experiment. His career has moved between tightly scripted films and improvisation-heavy character work, making him well suited to a role that appears to depend on disguise and theatrical mischief.

The production also offers Tarantino a major project outside cinema while questions continue around his next film. For now, The Popinjay Cavalier is not a side announcement but a dated, venue-backed commitment. London audiences will be the first to see whether his screen sensibility can become a compelling night of live theater.
