Rob Reiner earned a posthumous Creative Arts Emmy for his guest role on ‘The Bear,’ 48 years after his previous acting win.
Rob Reiner has received a posthumous Emmy for his guest performance on The Bear. The filmmaker and actor won Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series during the second night of the 2026 Creative Arts Emmy Awards on September 6.
Reiner played restaurant consultant Albert Schurr in the FX series’ fourth season. His winning episode, “Tonnato,” placed the veteran performer inside the tense business world surrounding the show’s Chicago restaurant while giving him a late-career television role with a quieter, mentoring presence.
The win created an unusual piece of Emmy history
The honor came 48 years after Reiner’s previous acting Emmy. He last won in 1978 for his supporting work as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on All in the Family, making the span between his acting victories the longest recorded by the awards.
The earlier mark belonged to his father, Carl Reiner, whose acting wins were separated by 37 years. The family connection gave Sunday’s result an added layer of television history, linking two generations whose careers helped shape American comedy.
Presenter Wendi McLendon-Covey accepted the award as the room gave Reiner a standing ovation. His The Bear work prevailed over a field that included Connor Storrie, Hamish Linklater, Christopher McDonald, Michael J. Fox and Brett Goldstein.
A final television role joins a wide-ranging legacy
Reiner, who died in December 2025, was best known as a director of films including When Harry Met Sally, The Princess Bride, Stand by Me and This Is Spinal Tap. Before moving behind the camera, his performance on All in the Family made him one of the defining sitcom actors of the 1970s.
His three appearances in the fourth season of The Bear premiered in June. The show also acknowledged Albert in its finale, keeping the character connected to the restaurant’s future. The Emmy now stands as a formal recognition of Reiner’s final chapter as an onscreen performer.
