Ruth Jones and James Corden lead Apple TV’s ‘The Choir,’ an eight-episode comedy drama with Hannah Waddingham and James McAvoy.
Ruth Jones and James Corden are reuniting for The Choir, an eight-episode Apple TV comedy drama that places two estranged siblings at the center of a struggling small-town singing group.
The project is their first television collaboration since the 2024 finale of Gavin & Stacey. Jones and Corden will write, executive produce and star, returning to the mix of family tension and community comedy that defined their earlier success without reviving its characters.
An estranged family meets a community choir
Corden plays Ben, who has spent years living abroad, while Jones plays his older sister Lisa, who stayed in the English town they grew up in. A difficult turn of events forces Ben home to a place and family he had tried to leave behind.
The local choir becomes the unlikely space where the siblings may repair their relationship. Jones has said the idea grew from personal connections: Corden’s mother and her own sister both sing in choirs. The creators are using that setting to explore how people from different backgrounds build a shared routine and sense of belonging.
The premise gives the series two scales to work on at once. Ben and Lisa’s private conflict drives the story, while rehearsals bring in a wider ensemble whose lives can expand each episode beyond one family. Apple TV has described the show as a story about estrangement, community and the healing potential of singing together.
A deep cast joins Jones and Corden
The regular ensemble includes Tom Davis, Rosie Sheehy, Susan Brown, Jason Watkins, David Harewood, Alexandria Riley and Sylvestra Le Touzel. Tom Edden, Gary Lamont, Emily Lloyd-Saini, Stephen Leask, Luiis Rouf, Jo Foster, Evie Jones and Farrah Abbassy also appear.
Three prominent performers are set for guest roles across the season: Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham, James McAvoy and Jim Broadbent. Their characters have not yet been detailed, leaving the production room to reveal how each connects to the choir or the siblings.
The Choir is now in production and is expected to premiere on Apple TV in 2027. No exact release date has been announced.
The new series arrives after Jones and Corden closed the door on another Gavin & Stacey return. By building around a different family and a larger musical community, they are beginning a fresh story while preserving the collaborative voice that made their previous show a British television landmark.
