Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey will return to more than 1,000 North American screens on December 11, including Imax 70mm venues.
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is heading back to North American theaters on December 11, giving audiences another chance to see the epic in Imax and Imax 70mm. Universal plans to return the film to more than 1,000 screens in the United States and Canada, with standard formats included in the rollout.
A large-format encore after a record run
The new engagement follows a limited Imax return in October and extends an unusually durable theatrical campaign. Released on July 17, the historical adventure has earned a reported $1.8 billion worldwide, including $626 million in North America. It became the highest-grossing film of Nolan’s career and Universal’s biggest global release.
The movie also carried special significance for Imax. It was the first feature photographed entirely with Imax cameras and set company records, including the highest worldwide Imax gross and the largest domestic opening for an Imax 70mm release.
The December date arrives after the movie’s planned November 17 launch on premium video-on-demand, 4K and DVD. That sequence puts the film in homes before bringing it back to premium screens, an approach that treats the large-format version as a distinct theatrical experience rather than simply extending the original run.
The cast returns to the biggest screens
Matt Damon leads the film as Odysseus, the king of Ithaca attempting to return home after the Trojan War. The ensemble also includes Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Elliot Page and John Leguizamo.
The film’s 2-hour-and-52-minute running time and adult historical subject did not prevent it from becoming one of the year’s largest commercial releases. It ranked as 2026’s second-highest-grossing movie worldwide in the figures reported with the re-release announcement.
For viewers who missed the original 70mm engagements—or could not travel to one of the relatively few equipped venues—the wider December booking creates another opportunity. Individual theaters and exact showtimes will still vary by market, so the 1,000-screen plan does not mean every location will offer the 70mm presentation. The defining attraction remains the scale Nolan built into the production from the start.
