TikTok is rolling out a conversational AI shopping assistant and Buy Direct checkout, aiming to shorten the path from product discovery to purchase.

TikTok is pushing social shopping deeper into the app with a conversational AI assistant and a new checkout option called Buy Direct. The tools are designed to move users from discovering a product in a video to researching and purchasing it with fewer steps.

What the new shopping assistant does

The Shopping Assistant can answer questions about products, including details about sizing, availability, shipping and other purchase considerations. TikTok says the system can understand the context of a conversation and remember a shopper’s preferences while the exchange continues.

Buy Direct complements that discovery layer by allowing users to purchase from participating brands inside TikTok. The company describes both features as part of its new “Agentic Commerce” experiences, a broader effort to use automated assistants throughout the shopping journey.

TikTok is building the commerce tools with outside platforms and payment providers, including Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe. The company has not presented the rollout as a universal replacement for TikTok Shop; instead, it is another way for brands to connect product discovery, customer questions and checkout.

TikTok’s wider AI advertising push

The shopping update arrived as part of a larger package announced around Advertising Week New York. TikTok also introduced Agentic Leads, which uses guided AI conversations to help businesses identify and qualify potential customers through direct messages or forms on advertiser websites.

Other additions are aimed more directly at marketers. TikTok Ad Network is designed to extend campaigns beyond the core app across a network of outside applications, while new automation tools can help advertisers plan search campaigns, select creative assets and manage performance.

For everyday users, the most visible change will be the attempt to make shopping feel more like a conversation than a search box. That could reduce friction when a product appears in a creator’s video, but it also places more responsibility on TikTok to provide accurate recommendations, clear sponsored-content disclosures and reliable information about price, stock and delivery.

The company has not specified a single global availability date for every feature. Access may depend on market, participating brands and commerce partners, so users should expect the tools to appear gradually rather than all at once.
