Sheryl Lee Ralph says she would happily keep playing Barbara Howard for years as ‘Abbott Elementary’ prepares to launch Season 6.
Sheryl Lee Ralph is not looking for the exit at Abbott Elementary. As the ABC comedy prepares to begin its sixth season, the actor says she would gladly continue playing veteran teacher Barbara Howard for years to come.
Ralph pointed to the longevity of Grey’s Anatomy as proof that an ABC series can sustain a long run. Her ambition is not a renewal announcement, but it offers a clear view of how strongly she remains attached to Barbara after five completed seasons.
Barbara Howard still has room to grow
Ralph said she is not tired of the character and wants to continue the journey with her. If the comedy were to add another five seasons, she said she would still hope to be there while Barbara develops alongside her.
That future ultimately depends on creator Quinta Brunson, the writers and ABC. Brunson has previously discussed the demands of producing the show and the way its seven-month shooting schedule can limit cast members’ ability to pursue other work. Ralph’s comments acknowledge that reality while making her own enthusiasm unmistakable.
Barbara has been one of the show’s anchors from the beginning: experienced, firm and deeply invested in Abbott’s students. Ralph’s performance has helped the character evolve beyond the familiar image of a strict senior teacher, revealing her humor, pride and capacity to change.
Season 6 starts a new school year
The new season premieres Wednesday, October 7, at 8:30 p.m. Eastern on ABC. Episodes will stream the following day on Hulu and through Hulu on Disney+ for eligible bundle subscribers.
Disney’s season preview confirms the return of Janine, Gregory, Barbara, Ava and the rest of the school’s staff. The new episodes bring another group of students into the underfunded Philadelphia public school while preserving the workplace comedy’s focus on teachers relying on one another.
Ralph’s comparison with Grey’s Anatomy may be aspirational, but it captures a practical advantage for Abbott Elementary: its school setting can generate new classroom problems every year. Her willingness to remain gives the series continuity as it begins its next term.
