The ‘Lanterns’ finale resolves Hal Jordan’s murder and lets John Stewart claim the Green Lantern role through a deeply personal choice.
Spoiler warning: This article discusses major events from the Lanterns Season 1 finale.
Lanterns ended its first season by completing John Stewart’s transformation from reluctant recruit to Earth’s self-appointed Green Lantern. The HBO drama’s eighth episode, “Dirt and Stars,” resolves the mystery surrounding Hal Jordan’s death while giving John a version of the hero’s oath built around his own choices.
The conclusion favors an emotional handoff over a giant effects-driven battle. John solves the season’s central case, says goodbye to Hal’s hologram and accepts responsibility for protecting Earth. That quieter approach turns the finale into a character decision rather than a conventional superhero victory lap.
John chooses the ring on his own terms
Co-creator Chris Mundy explained that the writers wanted the ending to stay focused on the bond between John and Hal. Their relationship began in conflict, but it gradually became the emotional center of the series. Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler play their final exchange with the weight of that difficult history behind them.
John’s new oath is equally personal. Instead of simply repeating the familiar language from the comics, he acknowledges fear and declares that he is choosing both the ring and the fight. The change reflects a season in which he repeatedly resisted institutions that expected his loyalty before deciding what the role meant to him.
The finale also leaves Sinestro connected to a dangerous yellow lantern powered by fear, preserving a larger threat beyond the solved murder. John, meanwhile, divides responsibilities with Guy Gardner: John will watch Earth while Guy looks toward the stars.
The DC Universe connection is already set
HBO had not announced a second season when the finale coverage was published. John Stewart’s screen future is nevertheless secure: Pierre is expected to return in Superman: Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for July 9, 2027.
That makes the finale more than a closing chapter. It establishes the version of John who will enter the next DC Studios film — independent, aware of the cost of the ring and unwilling to surrender his judgment to another authority. Even without a renewal decision, Lanterns has delivered a complete origin for Earth’s newest protector.
