‘Starfleet Academy’ Sets Final Season for March 2027

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will return for its second and final season in March 2027, with Bill Nighy and Rosemarie DeWitt joining the Paramount+ series in guest roles.

The premiere window and casting news were announced Saturday during the Star Trek Universe panel at New York Comic Con. Paramount+ has not yet supplied an exact March release date, leaving the detailed rollout for a later announcement.

Bill Nighy and Rosemarie DeWitt join ‘Starfleet Academy’

Nighy will play Nyk Ake, the estranged father of academy chancellor Nahla Ake, portrayed by Holly Hunter. DeWitt will appear as Laytha Sadal, the mother of Tarima and the First Lady of Betazed. First-look images released with the announcement introduced both characters in costume.

The additions give the final season new family connections for two established characters. Nighy is known for films including Living and About Time, while DeWitt’s recent television work includes Untamed and The Staircase.

Hunter appeared at the Comic Con panel alongside cast members Sandro Rosta, Bella Shepard, Karim Diané and Robert Picardo. Co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau also participated as the series offered its clearest preview yet of the concluding chapter.

The cadets’ second year will also be their last

Season 2 follows the cadets into their second year aboard the USS Athena. The official description points to new tests involving leadership, friendship, romance and morality, along with rivalries, diplomatic negotiations and a schoolwide tournament.

A mysterious new cadet will also arrive, raising questions with consequences beyond the classroom. The setup suggests that the show’s final run will keep its coming-of-age structure while widening the stakes around the academy and its students.

Paramount+ previously confirmed that the second season would close the series. Kurtzman has said the team is in post-production and intends to finish strongly, giving the production time to shape a planned ending rather than leaving its students’ stories unresolved.

For viewers, the new announcement supplies three firm pieces of information: the March 2027 window, two guest stars and confirmation that the upcoming episodes are the finale. An exact premiere day and complete episode schedule remain outstanding.
