Ben Affleck says the Justice League reshoots marked his career low, citing studio conflict, personal strain and a fractured production.

Ben Affleck has offered one of his bluntest assessments yet of Justice League, describing the troubled production and its extensive reshoots as the lowest point of his career.

Speaking on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Affleck said the experience was negative for several overlapping reasons. He cited his own circumstances at the time, the tragedy surrounding director Zack Snyder’s family and the damage caused when a studio and filmmaker are no longer moving in the same direction.

Affleck revisits a fractured production

Snyder left the 2017 film after the death of his daughter Autumn. Joss Whedon then oversaw major reshoots and completed the theatrical version. Affleck said in the interview that he believed Snyder’s personal tragedy was used as an excuse during the leadership change, a part of the episode he found especially upsetting.

The actor also referred to accounts from cast members Ray Fisher and Gal Gadot about the environment surrounding the reshoots. He did not present himself as a firsthand witness to every allegation, noting that some of what he knew came secondhand.

Both Deadline and TheWrap reported Affleck’s new comments from the podcast. TheWrap noted that the theatrical movie earned roughly $661 million worldwide, a substantial total that still fell below the expectations attached to the first live-action team-up of several of DC’s biggest heroes.

His Batman era remains complicated

Affleck first played Bruce Wayne in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and returned for Justice League. His performance attracted a dedicated audience even as the wider franchise faced shifting plans, critical debate and changes behind the camera.

A longer version built from Snyder’s footage arrived in 2021 as Zack Snyder’s Justice League, giving fans a markedly different interpretation of the story. Affleck later appeared again as Batman in The Flash.

His latest remarks are less a criticism of the character than a warning about filmmaking without a shared creative direction. Affleck framed the production as a lesson in what can happen when institutional decisions, personal hardship and a high-pressure franchise collide. Years after hanging up the cape, that process—not playing Batman itself—remains the memory he identifies as his professional low.
