Olivia Rodrigo recruits Chappell Roan for her first career remix, pairing a new verse with a retro video featuring David Byrne.
Olivia Rodrigo has released the first remix of her career, bringing Chappell Roan into a new version of “Expectations” and pairing the track with a playful, game-show-inspired video.
The collaboration arrived Thursday with a visual directed by Bardia Zeinali. Rodrigo and Roan move through sets modeled on vintage television competitions, while Talking Heads frontman David Byrne appears as the fictional host Johnny Johnson. Producer Dan Nigro also makes a cameo, completing a cast that connects the song’s studio history to its deliberately theatrical presentation.
A new verse changes the conversation
Roan contributes a fresh verse that shifts the dating story toward her own perspective. The addition does more than place another recognizable voice on the recording: it creates a back-and-forth between two writers known for turning awkward emotions into sharp pop narratives.
The release is also a milestone for Roan, who described it as her first featured appearance on another artist’s song. In an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, she said the track appealed to her because it places a difficult idea inside an accessible pop structure. Rodrigo, meanwhile, said Byrne committed fully to his invented host character and improvised throughout the shoot.
A partnership built over several years
Although this is their first official remix together, Rodrigo and Roan have shared a creative orbit for years. Both work with Nigro, and Roan previously opened dates on Rodrigo’s “Sour” and “Guts” tours. They have also performed together, while Roan appeared at Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Fields festival in California in August.
That history helps the remix feel less like a surprise pairing and more like the next step in a relationship that has developed onstage and behind the scenes. The retro video keeps the rollout light and colorful, but the new verse gives listeners a clear reason to return to the song rather than treating the release as a simple repackage.
