Cynthia Erivo says scrutiny of her bond with Wicked co-star Ariana Grande reflects a double standard applied to women’s friendships.
Cynthia Erivo is pushing back on the online scrutiny surrounding her friendship with Ariana Grande, arguing that the emotional warmth the two women showed during the Wicked press cycle was treated as suspicious rather than ordinary.
In a recent Guardian interview covered by Variety and TheWrap, Erivo reflected on the public reaction to the co-stars’ close bond. Their interviews for the 2024 film and its sequel produced a steady stream of viral clips, including emotional answers, shared laughter and small gestures of support. Erivo said the attention often shifted away from the work and toward amateur analysis of their relationship.
Erivo questions the double standard
Erivo’s central point was not that every joke about a press tour is harmful. Instead, she questioned why two women displaying affection and vulnerability prompted so many viewers to search for a hidden problem. She suggested that male co-stars showing comparable camaraderie would be less likely to face the same level of suspicion.
The actor also described the impossible balance created by that commentary. If she and Grande appeared visibly moved, some viewers treated the response as excessive. If they had remained detached, she argued, that distance would likely have generated a different set of complaints. Her response reframes the viral moments as a discussion about the narrow emotional range audiences sometimes permit famous women.
A friendship shaped by a demanding production
Erivo plays Elphaba opposite Grande’s Glinda in Jon M. Chu’s screen adaptation of the Broadway musical. The roles place the characters’ evolving relationship at the center of the story, and the performers spent years moving through production, promotion and awards-season appearances together.
That context helps explain why the pair’s rapport became part of the public conversation. It also shows why reducing their connection to a meme can flatten a relationship formed through an unusually long and visible creative process.
Erivo’s comments do not ask audiences to stop engaging with celebrity interviews. They do, however, draw a line between enjoying a viral moment and insisting that ordinary closeness must be evidence of something strange. For two stars whose on-screen work is built around friendship, rivalry and mutual recognition, that distinction is especially relevant.
