James Gunn says Harley Quinn is likely to appear in the DCU, but Margot Robbie’s return depends on whether the actor wants to play her again.
Margot Robbie has not been confirmed to return as Harley Quinn in the new DC Universe, but the possibility is still alive. DC Studios co-chief James Gunn says the character is likely to appear again, while Robbie’s involvement will depend on whether she wants another turn in the role.
James Gunn leaves the door open for Margot Robbie
During the official The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon? podcast, Gunn praised Robbie as one of his favorite actors to work with and said he loved her performance as Harley. He also acknowledged that he does not know whether she wants to play the character again.
That distinction matters: Gunn was not announcing a casting decision or saying Robbie had stepped away. Instead, he described two possible paths. If she wants to return, he said he would work to explain her place in the DCU. If she does not, the studio could eventually cast someone else.
Continuity makes Harley Quinn a complicated case
Gunn said Harley is one of the harder characters to carry into the new continuity because her history is closely tied to the Joker. Batman has appeared in the DCU through a cameo in the animated series Creature Commandos, but this universe has not yet established its own Joker on screen.
Robbie first played Harley in 2016’s Suicide Squad, returned for Birds of Prey and then joined Gunn’s 2021 film The Suicide Squad. Those performances made her version of the character a major part of the previous DC film era, even as the franchise later shifted to a new interconnected plan.
What is actually decided
The clearest point is that Gunn expects Harley Quinn to remain part of DC’s future. What is not settled is the performer, the project or the timing. No new Harley film or series was announced in the discussion, and Robbie has not publicly committed to another appearance through the sources reviewed for this report.
For fans, the comments are an invitation to keep the possibility open rather than proof of a comeback. Until Robbie or DC Studios makes a formal announcement, her return remains a creative option—not a confirmed production plan.
