Patrick Stewart, the celebrated actor behind Captain Picard and Professor X, has died at 86 after a six-decade stage and screen career.

Sir Patrick Stewart, the commanding British actor who made Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Professor Charles Xavier enduring fixtures of popular culture, has died at 86. His family said he died Wednesday at his Los Angeles home, with his wife Sunny Ozell beside him, after living with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.

A career that joined Shakespeare and science fiction

Long before he took the bridge of the Enterprise, Stewart built his reputation onstage. He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966 and spent years performing roles including Shylock, Prospero and Macbeth. That classical training became central to the authority and restraint he brought to Star Trek: The Next Generation, which began in 1987 and ran for seven seasons.

Stewart later carried Picard into four feature films and returned to the character in Star Trek: Picard, which concluded in 2023. For another generation of moviegoers, he was Charles Xavier, the principled telepath at the center of the X-Men films. His final screen appearance is expected to be another turn as Xavier in Avengers: Doomsday.

Tributes span his biggest creative worlds

William Shatner remembered Stewart as a friend, colleague and magnificent actor, while Hugh Jackman said he had lost both a great performer and a tremendous friend. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige praised Stewart’s warmth, humor and generosity as well as the gravity he brought to Xavier.

Stewart’s work extended well beyond his two best-known franchises. His credits included Dune, Excalibur, Green Room, Jeffrey and numerous voice performances. He also continued returning to the theater, earning major recognition for productions of Hamlet, Macbeth and A Christmas Carol.

He was knighted in 2010 and used his public platform to support survivors of domestic violence, refugees, veterans’ mental health services and animal welfare. He is survived by Ozell and his children, Daniel and Sophie. Across stage, television and film, Stewart leaves a body of work defined by intelligence, compassion and an unmistakable voice.
