Netflix has started production on a new ‘Inbetweeners’ movie, reuniting Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison and Joe Thomas.
The original Inbetweeners quartet is getting back into the yellow car. Netflix has confirmed a new feature film starring Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison and Joe Thomas, with production beginning September 7.
Bird, Buckley, Harrison and Thomas will again play Will McKenzie, Jay Cartwright, Neil Sutherland and Simon Cooper. The announcement moves the reunion beyond the speculation that had surrounded the British comedy over the past year, though Netflix has not yet revealed a release date or detailed plot.
The old team is steering the reunion
Series creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris are returning to write and direct. Claire Jones is producing alongside Banijay’s Patrick Holland and Fudge Park Productions’ Mark Lesbirel, while Film4 is also represented among the executive producers.
Netflix introduced the project with a short teaser built around one of the show’s most recognizable props: Simon’s battered yellow Fiat Cinquecento. The four friends pile into the tiny car, struggle to start it and eventually drive away. It is a compact way to signal that the film intends to reconnect with the awkward chemistry of the original series without giving away the new story.
A comedy franchise returns after a long break
The Inbetweeners originally followed four suburban teenagers through school, friendship and repeated social disasters. The television series aired from 2008 to 2010, then expanded into two Film4-backed movies released in 2011 and 2014. Clips from the show have continued circulating on social media, helping the comedy reach viewers who missed its initial run.
The new movie arrives more than a decade after the second film. For now, only the four lead actors and the returning creators are confirmed. Netflix has not announced whether other familiar cast members will appear, so the reunion’s wider lineup remains open.
That limited reveal keeps the focus on the central friendship. The teaser offers nostalgia, but the production start is the concrete news: Will, Jay, Neil and Simon are officially back together for another feature-length misadventure.
