June Squibb, Linda Hamilton, Caroline Aaron and Jayne Eastwood will star in Hot Curlers, a New Zealand comedy inspired by a true story.
June Squibb and Linda Hamilton are heading to the ice for Hot Curlers, a new sports comedy inspired by a true story from New Zealand. Caroline Aaron and Jayne Eastwood have also joined the ensemble, giving the project a veteran cast built around an unlikely Olympic dream.
Filmmaker David White will direct from a screenplay he co-wrote with Anna Taylor. Production is expected to take place in New Zealand and Calgary in early 2027, while Cornerstone Films is introducing the movie to international buyers at the Toronto International Film Festival market.
‘Hot Curlers’ pairs an Olympic goal with an unusual home
The story follows four young curlers from Naseby, a small community on New Zealand’s South Island, who set their sights on reaching the Winter Olympics. Their ambition takes them to Calgary for training, but a tight budget leaves them searching for an affordable place to stay.
The solution is the movie’s central comic hook: the team moves into a retirement home. Its residents soon become an improvised support system of coaches, cheerleaders and family, shifting the story from a straightforward underdog competition toward a multigenerational tale about belonging. George Ferrier is also part of the cast.
A cast with comedy and action credentials
Squibb arrives after leading the action comedy Thelma and appearing in Scarlett Johansson’s Eleanor the Great. Hamilton remains closely associated with the Terminator franchise, while Aaron’s screen credits include 21 Jump Street and Eastwood appeared in My Big Fat Greek Wedding.
Those performers give the retirement-home side of the story considerable personality before filming has begun. The premise depends on the older residents being more than background characters: they become active participants in the athletes’ attempt to compete, turning limited resources into an unconventional team advantage.
No release date or distributor has been announced. For now, the film is entering the sales stage with its principal cast, director, production locations and early-2027 schedule in place. Its combination of curling, found family and veteran stars gives Hot Curlers a clear identity as it seeks partners in Toronto.
