‘Point Break’ Series Gets an Eight-Episode Order at AMC

The Point Break TV series is officially moving from development to production. AMC and AMC+ have ordered an eight-episode first season that returns to the world of the 1991 surf-and-heist thriller, more than three decades after the original story.

The present-day continuation centers on a new robbery crew inspired by the masked Ex-Presidents gang. To get inside the operation, the FBI turns to a mysterious former professional surfer whose past is far from clean. That setup preserves the collision of crime, waves and divided loyalties that made the first movie a cult favorite, while introducing a different group of characters.

A fresh ride on familiar mythology

Dave Kalstein and Christopher C. Rogers will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers. Production is scheduled to begin in early 2027, although AMC has not announced the cast or a premiere date. Alcon Television Group, AMC Studios and StudioCanal are producing the project.

The distribution plan gives the series a broad footprint. AMC and AMC+ will carry it in the United States, while Canal+ is set to air it in France and across its pay-TV network in Europe, Africa and Asia. StudioCanal will handle sales and distribution in other international markets outside the United States and Canada.

Why the original still matters

Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 film starred Keanu Reeves as rookie FBI agent Johnny Utah and Patrick Swayze as surfer and bank robber Bodhi. Its mix of action, risk-taking and intense male friendship helped the film outlast its initial theatrical run and become a durable pop-culture reference.

A separate big-screen remake arrived in 2015, but the AMC project is framed as a follow-up rather than another direct retelling. That distinction gives the creative team room to build a longer story around the Ex-Presidents legacy instead of recasting the same central relationship. For now, the eight-episode order and early-2027 production window are firm; casting and release timing remain the next major details to watch.
