Netflix and Sega are developing Crazy Taxi and Stranger Than Heaven films plus a new Sonic animated series for younger viewers.

Netflix and Sega are building a new slate of game adaptations around three very different properties: Crazy Taxi, Sonic the Hedgehog and Stranger Than Heaven. The projects include two live-action films and an animated series aimed at younger viewers.

Crazy Taxi moves toward live action

The first project expected from the partnership is a Crazy Taxi movie. Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, the writing duo behind the 2025 The Naked Gun reboot, are working on the screenplay. Producers Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher and Toru Nakahara, all connected to the screen franchise built around Sonic, are also involved.

The original arcade game debuted in 1999 and made speed, shortcuts and punk-rock energy central to its identity. Players race through busy streets, collect passengers and chase tips against the clock. A new game, Crazy Taxi: World Tour, is scheduled for 2027, but Netflix has not announced a release date for the film.

The Verge and Engadget both reported the adaptation plans. Their accounts indicate that the movie will lean into the series’ chaotic comedy rather than treating the property as a conventional driving drama.

Sonic and Stranger Than Heaven expand the slate

Netflix is also developing a new animated Sonic series for an upper-preschool audience. The project follows Sonic Prime, which already ran for three seasons on the service, but is being described as a separate show with a younger focus. Carlos Stevens and Nakahara are developing the series.

The third project is a live-action film based on Stranger Than Heaven, the coming title from RGG Studio, developer of the Like a Dragon and Yakuza games. The story is set in early 20th-century Japan and follows a foreigner’s rise from poverty into the criminal underworld and entertainment business. Details about the film remain limited.

Taken together, the announcements show Netflix and Sega choosing range over repetition. One adaptation is a fast comedy built around an arcade classic, another extends a globally familiar mascot toward younger children, and the third draws from a more mature crime saga. The common thread is Sega’s catalog, not a single tone or audience.
