Prime Video will release all eight Bloodaxe episodes on January 20, 2027, with Season 2 already in production in Ireland.

Prime Video has set January 20, 2027, as the global premiere date for Bloodaxe, the new historical drama from Vikings creator Michael Hirst and his son Horatio Hirst. All eight episodes of the first season are scheduled to arrive that day in more than 240 countries and territories.

The streamer unveiled the date and a first teaser during a New York Comic Con panel on October 9. Michael and Horatio Hirst appeared with cast members Xavier Molyneux, Jessica Madsen and Levi Miller to introduce the series and its vision of 10th-century Norway.

Erik Bloodaxe and Gunnhild fight for Norway

The story follows Norse raider Erik Bloodaxe, played by Molyneux, and his wife Gunnhild, played by Madsen. Their push for the Norwegian throne unfolds amid rival rulers, unstable loyalties and wars that reach beyond Norway into the wider Scandinavian world and England.

The first-season cast also includes Karlis Arnolds Avots as Egil Skallagrimsson, Miller as Haakon the Good, Rod Hallett as King Athelstan and Jesper Christensen as King Harald Fairhair. Alina Tomnikov takes on the dual roles of Greta and the Seer, while Sisse Marie plays Queen Thyra and Rune Temte appears as King Gorm.

A second season is already underway

Prime Video has renewed Bloodaxe before its debut, and production on Season 2 is underway in Ireland. Michael and Horatio Hirst are the co-creators, writers, showrunners and executive producers. MGM Television, part of Amazon MGM Studios, is producing the series.

The early renewal gives the drama room to develop its royal conflict beyond the opening eight episodes rather than treating the January launch as a one-season experiment. It also positions Bloodaxe as Prime Video’s next large-scale historical saga, with a creative team already closely associated with television’s modern Viking boom.

The teaser is the first extended public look at that approach. Viewers will be able to watch the complete first chapter when the series arrives on January 20.
