Dave Grohl joined AC/DC for “Highway to Hell” at MetLife Stadium, closing the Power Up Tour with a full-circle rock moment.

Dave Grohl turned AC/DC’s final Power Up Tour stop into a cross-generational rock moment, joining the Australian band for “Highway to Hell” at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Friday night.

Foo Fighters had already been announced as the surprise opening act after the concert was rescheduled from September 25 because of a nor’easter. That placed Grohl in the building for the closing date of AC/DC’s two-year tour and set up a guest appearance that carried more personal weight than the usual encore cameo.

A childhood influence comes full circle

During Foo Fighters’ opening set, Grohl told the crowd that seeing AC/DC’s concert film Let There Be Rock at age 11 changed his understanding of live performance. He described being struck by the band’s physical intensity and deciding that rock music was what he wanted to pursue.

Later, AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson introduced Grohl as a friend who had asked to join the group for one of its defining songs. Grohl then took the stage with Johnson, guitarist Angus Young and the touring lineup for “Highway to Hell,” turning his childhood inspiration into a stadium-sized collaboration.

The appearance also extended an existing connection between the two bands. Foo Fighters previously opened for AC/DC in St. Louis on September 8, stepping in for the tour’s regular support act, The Pretty Reckless. Friday’s New Jersey show gave the pairing a larger finale, with Foo Fighters opening and Grohl returning during AC/DC’s set.

A notable end to the Power Up run

The MetLife performance closed AC/DC’s current itinerary after two years on the road. No additional dates were listed as the show ended, giving the night an added sense of finality without confirming that it was the band’s last concert.

For Grohl, the guest spot connected the music that shaped him as a child with the career he built in Nirvana and Foo Fighters. For the crowd, it delivered a clear finale image: one arena-rock frontman celebrating the band that first showed him how loud, physical and communal a rock show could be.
