Ellen Pompeo to lead Hulu mystery drama Not a Sound

Ellen Pompeo is set to headline Not a Sound, a new Hulu mystery drama that gives the Grey’s Anatomy star another medical role with a very different premise. Pompeo will play Amelia Winn, a former emergency-room nurse whose life changes after a hit-and-run causes her to lose her hearing.

A medical story becomes a murder mystery

The series follows Amelia after she and her service dog discover the body of a former colleague. The killing draws her into an investigation that may also expose what really happened during the accident that ended her hospital career.

Not a Sound is based on Heather Gudenkauf’s novel of the same name. Matthew Tinker and Annakate Chappell are writing the television adaptation, while David E. Kelley will serve as an executive producer through his production company. Pompeo is also attached as an executive producer.

The project gives Hulu a recognizable lead and a built-in literary mystery, but its central character also brings questions of accessibility and representation. The official description makes Amelia’s hearing loss part of her daily reality and investigative perspective rather than a temporary twist.

Pompeo expands her post-Meredith slate

Pompeo remains associated with Meredith Grey, the character she has played for more than two decades. She has reduced her episode count on Grey’s Anatomy in recent seasons while continuing to appear and provide narration. The ABC series is returning for a 23rd season.

She has also been building a broader relationship with Hulu. Pompeo recently starred in the anthology drama Good American Family, which has been renewed for a second season, and she remains attached to other projects in development.

No premiere date or full supporting cast for Not a Sound has been announced. The series nevertheless marks a clear next step in Pompeo’s effort to move beyond a single long-running character without leaving the medical-drama territory that made her a television fixture.
