James Gunn says he has started writing another movie while the completed assembly of ‘Superman: Man of Tomorrow’ enters post-production.
James Gunn has begun writing his next movie even before Superman: Man of Tomorrow reaches theaters, keeping his creative schedule moving while the completed sequel enters post-production.
The DC Studios co-chief revealed the update while responding to a fan who asked whether he was ready to start another screenplay. Gunn said he was already working on it because he needed something to do while waiting for the assembly of Man of Tomorrow.
The new project remains a mystery
Gunn did not identify the movie, its characters or its place in the developing DC Universe. The announcement therefore confirms a writing project rather than a formally dated production. It also leaves open whether he intends to direct the film himself or is preparing a script for another filmmaker.
What is clear is that the first assembly cut of Man of Tomorrow has been completed. Production wrapped in August, and the movie is scheduled to open in theaters on July 9, 2027.
The sequel brings David Corenswet back as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The story is set to force the rivals into an uneasy alliance against Brainiac, played by Lars Eidinger. Rachel Brosnahan returns as Lois Lane, with other established DC characters continuing around the central conflict.
Gunn’s writing remains central to DC Studios
Gunn has combined creative work with executive leadership since he and producer Peter Safran took charge of DC Studios in 2022. He wrote and directed the 2025 Superman, then continued directly into its follow-up while overseeing a wider slate across film and television.
That dual role makes the unnamed screenplay significant even without a title. A Gunn-written movie can help signal which characters and storylines will receive priority as the franchise expands.
For now, the next confirmed theatrical milestone is Man of Tomorrow. Gunn’s brief update shows that the project is far enough along for his attention to turn toward another script, but the identity of that film remains the next major reveal.
