Jessica Lange’s ‘Long Day’s Journey Into Night’ Sets U.S. Release

The Long Day’s Journey Into Night movie has secured a North American home and a U.S. release date. Quiver Distribution acquired the screen adaptation of Eugene O’Neill’s celebrated play and will open it in select theaters on September 25.

Jessica Lange leads the film as Mary Tyrone, reprising the role that earned her a Tony Award for the 2016 Broadway production. Ed Harris plays her husband, James Tyrone, while Ben Foster and Colin Morgan portray their sons, Jamie and Edmund. A special screening is set for September 14 at Film at Lincoln Center ahead of the theatrical rollout.

A stage reunion built for the screen

Jonathan Kent makes his feature directing debut with the adaptation after directing Lange in the same material on Broadway. Playwright and screenwriter David Lindsay-Abaire adapted O’Neill’s work for film, preserving its focus on a family caught between affection, resentment, addiction and buried pain.

The story unfolds around the Tyrones over the course of a deeply strained day. Mary struggles with addiction, James carries the compromises of his career and finances, Jamie drinks heavily, and the younger Edmund confronts illness while trying to understand his family. O’Neill drew extensively from his own life, with Edmund functioning as his autobiographical counterpart.

Jessica Lange returns to a defining role

The project’s clearest attraction is Lange’s chance to translate an acclaimed stage performance to film. Harris brings his own long record of intense character work, while Foster and Morgan complete a small ensemble that depends on emotional precision rather than spectacle.

Quiver acquired the North American distribution rights from the production team. The film was produced by Gabrielle Tana, Bill Kenwright, Gleb Fetisov and Redmond Morris, with the distribution agreement giving a wider audience a concrete opportunity to see a project that has already traveled through the festival circuit.

The September release places the film in the early stretch of the fall awards calendar, although no awards campaign has been announced in the reports. What is confirmed is more immediate: a select-theater launch, a major stage role carried onto the screen, and a cast built around four performers facing one of American drama’s most demanding families.
