Keanu Reeves will lead Netflix’s Maelstrom, a hurricane-set action thriller directed by Carry-On filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra.
Keanu Reeves is set to lead Maelstrom, a Netflix action thriller that has spent more than three decades moving through Hollywood development. The actor takes over the central role from Reacher star Alan Ritchson, who is no longer attached to the project. No reason for Ritchson’s departure has been officially announced.
Jaume Collet-Serra, the filmmaker behind Netflix’s Carry-On, is directing. Netflix representatives declined to comment on the casting, but both Deadline and TheWrap reported Reeves’ involvement on Monday.
A federal marshal faces a hurricane siege
The story follows a federal marshal assigned to protect the fiancée of an arms dealer who has become a witness. Their safe house turns into a trap when a hurricane cuts communications, blocks reinforcements and gives the dealer’s armed team an opportunity to attack during a single brutal night.
The premise dates back to 1993, when Gregory Fitzpatrick’s original screenplay was sold to Warner Bros. during Hollywood’s high-priced spec-script era. At the time, the project was described as a hurricane-set variation on the contained action formula popularized by Die Hard. The screenplay has now been revised by Mark Bianculli, who previously worked with Collet-Serra on a new version of Cliffhanger.
Reeves adds another action project
Former Warner Bros. film chief Jeff Robinov is producing alongside Tabitha Shick and Talking Pictures. A production timetable and release date have not yet been announced, leaving the project at the casting-and-development stage rather than ready for Netflix’s calendar.
Maelstrom joins a growing Reeves slate that includes Shiver, a science-fiction movie from director Tim Miller, and Ruben Östlund’s The Entertainment System Is Down. He is also expected to return as the voice of Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 4. The new film gives Reeves another high-pressure action role while reviving a screenplay first conceived for a very different era of the genre.
