Luca Guadagnino’s Artificial will premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 5, with Andrew Garfield starring as Sam Altman.

Luca Guadagnino’s “Artificial” is heading to New York for its world premiere. Film at Lincoln Center has added the movie to the Main Slate of the 64th New York Film Festival, where it will screen at Alice Tully Hall on October 5 with Guadagnino and members of the cast expected to attend.

A drama built around the rise of modern AI

The film traces two decades of machine-learning research through the relationship between key figures in the field. Yura Borisov plays computer scientist Ilya Sutskever, whose early work under University of Toronto professor Geoffrey Hinton helped shape the technology’s development. Mark Rylance portrays Hinton, while Andrew Garfield takes on the role of Sam Altman, the entrepreneur who became OpenAI’s co-founder and chief executive.

Film at Lincoln Center describes the movie as both funny and urgent, with a focus on the human decisions behind a technology often discussed in abstract terms. Simon Rich wrote the screenplay. Guadagnino’s cast also includes Monica Barbaro, Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, Cooper Koch, Will Price and Ike Barinholtz.

A festival launch after a studio change

The premiere gives “Artificial” a major public launch after a notable change in its distribution path. IndieWire reported that Amazon MGM stepped away from the project before Neon acquired it. The festival announcement now places the film in one of the season’s most visible showcases, with its October date landing near the center of the New York event.

Guadagnino is already a familiar presence at the festival. His previous NYFF selections include “Call Me by Your Name,” “Bones and All,” “Queer” and “After the Hunt.” “Artificial” also brings him back to stories about ambition and complicated personal dynamics, this time against the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence.

The 64th New York Film Festival runs from September 25 through October 12. By assigning “Artificial” a world premiere in the Main Slate, organizers have made it one of the event’s central additions. For moviegoers, the screening will offer the first full look at how Guadagnino and his ensemble have turned a recent chapter of technology history into a character-driven drama.
