Mahershala Ali Finds His Action Role After ‘Blade’

Mahershala Ali has turned the disappointment of an unrealized “Blade” collaboration into a new action role with director Bassam Tariq. Their film “Your Mother, Your Mother, Your Mother” premiered Saturday at the Toronto International Film Festival, placing Ali at the center of an original thriller built around family, faith and physical danger.

Ali plays Latif, a Muslim contract killer trying to protect and provide for his three children after the death of his wife. His path across Houston brings him into conflict with Haun Yoon, an Army veteran and militant church leader played by John Cho. The premise gives Ali the kind of demanding screen movement he had been preparing to explore while attached to Marvel’s “Blade.”

A partnership survived a stalled plan

Tariq and Ali first developed a working relationship on the Marvel project, although their version never reached production. Rather than ending there, that connection gave Tariq the confidence to approach Ali with a deeply personal script he had been shaping for years.

The director has described the film’s earliest inspiration as his experience of fatherhood and the fear of not being enough as a provider. Pandemic isolation, time with his children and his decision to leave “Blade” helped sharpen the story. Tariq ultimately imagined the movie as a kind of modern samurai tale in which a man must confront destructive versions of himself to become the father his children need.

Ali responded to both sides of that idea. He said the material demanded emotional depth while also giving him an opportunity to invest in action, movement and physical performance. That combination distinguishes the project from a simple substitute for a superhero movie: its violence is tied to grief, responsibility and the character’s effort to hold a family together.

From TIFF to theaters

The Toronto premiere gives audiences their first full look at how Tariq translated those ambitions into an original feature. It also marks a reunion formed from one of Hollywood’s most closely watched stalled productions, but without the restrictions of an established franchise.

Amazon MGM Studios is scheduled to release “Your Mother, Your Mother, Your Mother” in theaters on September 25. For Ali and Tariq, the rollout turns an abandoned path into a fresh collaboration—one designed around the specific emotional and physical work they wanted to pursue together.
