Margaret Qualley anchors Rachel Morrison’s TIFF drama Love of Your Life, ahead of its October theatrical and Prime Video releases.

Margaret Qualley has brought a new story of romance, grief and self-recovery to the Toronto International Film Festival. Love of Your Life, directed by Rachel Morrison, held its world premiere at TIFF with Qualley at the center of a drama that follows one woman across several countries and radically different chapters of her life.

A romance reshaped by loss

Qualley plays Maya, an emergency-room nurse in Boston whose guarded life changes when she meets Charlie, played by Gabriel Basso. Their fast-moving romance leads to marriage, but the relationship is cut short when Charlie becomes seriously ill during the COVID-era pressure on Maya’s hospital. The loss sends Maya away from her old routines and relationships.

The story later catches up with her in Lisbon, where she is living without much connection to the person she used to be. A meeting with Felix, a single father played by Aaron Pierre, opens another possible path, while stops in London, New Orleans and Cape Cod push Maya to confront the people and feelings she left behind.

Catherine Keener and Patrick Schwarzenegger are also in the ensemble. Keener plays Charlie’s mother, Ruth, whose eventual reunion with Maya becomes an important emotional turn. Schwarzenegger appears as Jason, Maya’s longtime friend.

Rachel Morrison moves deeper into directing

The film is Morrison’s second narrative feature after The Fire Inside. She built her career as a cinematographer and became the first woman nominated for the Academy Award for best cinematography for Mudbound. Here, Todd Banhazl serves as cinematographer, working from a screenplay by Julia Cox.

Early reviews agreed that Qualley’s performance is the production’s anchor, even as critics differed over how smoothly the film handles Maya’s globe-spanning journey. The project was produced through Ryan Gosling’s Open Invite company and is being released by Amazon MGM Studios.

After its TIFF debut, Love of Your Life is scheduled for a one-week theatrical release beginning October 7, followed by a Prime Video launch on October 14. The rollout gives the intimate drama a brief cinema window before moving to a global streaming audience.
