Melissa Barrera says she still loves Scream but would only consider returning if the franchise moved beyond current rights holder Spyglass.

Melissa Barrera has not closed the door on Scream, but she has drawn a clear line around any possible return. The actress says she would consider playing Sam Carpenter again only if the horror franchise were no longer controlled by Spyglass Media Group.

Speaking in a recent JustWatch interview, Barrera said she still loves the series and remembers making the two films fondly. Her objection, she explained, is not to Scream itself but to the company that removed her from the seventh movie in 2023.

A return depends on who controls the franchise

Barrera said she would not work with the current rights holder even if the company apologized. She left open a different future, however, saying she could imagine returning if the property moved to leadership she believed would better honor the legacy of franchise creator Wes Craven.

The distinction matters for fans who have continued to associate Barrera with the modern chapter of the series. She starred as Sam in 2022’s Scream and 2023’s Scream VI, helping carry the story toward a younger ensemble while connecting it to the original films.

Spyglass dropped Barrera after social media posts about the Israel-Gaza war, saying at the time that it had zero tolerance for antisemitism or incitement of hate. Barrera has maintained that the company mischaracterized her. Her latest comments make clear that the professional break remains unresolved rather than a temporary disagreement.

The franchise continued without Sam Carpenter

Jenna Ortega subsequently exited the planned sequel, and director Christopher Landon also departed. The project was reworked around returning star Neve Campbell, with original screenwriter Kevin Williamson directing Scream 7.

Barrera’s position does not amount to a casting announcement, and there is no reported deal for her return. It instead defines the circumstances under which a reunion could someday become possible. For now, Sam Carpenter remains outside the active franchise, while Barrera’s affection for the movies coexists with a firm refusal to rejoin them under the present ownership.
