Michael J. Fox earned a standing ovation at the 2026 Emmys while accepting the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award for his advocacy.
Michael J. Fox received the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award at the 2026 Emmy Awards on Monday, September 14, earning a standing ovation as television’s biggest night paused to recognize decades of advocacy.
The honor, presented by the Television Academy and the Bob & Dolores Hope Foundation, recognizes a television figure whose charitable work has made a lasting social impact. Fox attended the ceremony at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater with his wife, Tracy Pollan. It marked their first Emmy Awards appearance together in 13 years.
A career turned toward advocacy
Fox was diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson’s disease in 1991, when he was 29, and disclosed the diagnosis publicly in 1998. He founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation in 2000, shifting a deeply personal challenge into a sustained campaign for research and better outcomes for people living with the disease.
During his acceptance speech, the actor reflected on the fear that initially kept his diagnosis private. He said he had worried that being open about his health could change his relationship with audiences or threaten his ability to work. The public support he later received, he explained, helped him understand that accepting Parkinson’s did not mean surrendering to it.
Family at the center of the moment
Fox also thanked Pollan and their four children for their patience, love and sacrifices. The family acknowledgment gave the appearance a personal dimension beyond the formal award, emphasizing the support system behind his public work.
Julianna Margulies, Fox’s former co-star on The Good Wife, presented the honor. The choice linked his humanitarian work to the television career that first made him a household name through projects including Family Ties, Spin City and the Back to the Future films.
The award placed advocacy, rather than nostalgia, at the center of Fox’s return to the Emmys. His speech framed visibility as part of the work: a way to support patients, families and researchers while reminding viewers that a diagnosis can alter a life without erasing its purpose.
