Miley Cyrus marked her full-concert return at the Hollywood Bowl with an emotional tribute to her late godmother, Dolly Parton.
Miley Cyrus turned her long-awaited return to full-length live performance into a deeply personal tribute to Dolly Parton at the Hollywood Bowl on Friday night. During the first of two sold-out Los Angeles shows, Cyrus paused to remember her late godmother before performing Parton’s 1973 classic “Jolene.”
The singer became emotional while describing their bond and the way grief has changed her sense of Parton’s presence. Rather than treating the moment as a formal memorial, she spoke about their connection as something permanent, then let one of Parton’s most recognizable songs carry the tribute forward.
A major stage return with personal stakes
The October 16 concert was Cyrus’ first complete public set in four years. Billboard reported that her previous full show took place in Mexico before a crowd of more than 150,000, while her recent appearances had largely been guest spots or intimate performances at Chateau Marmont.
At the Bowl, Cyrus balanced newer material from Bass Persuades with career-spanning hits including “We Can’t Stop,” “Party in the U.S.A.” and “The Climb.” She opened with three songs tied to the latest album, giving the project a prominent place in a show built equally around nostalgia and her current direction.
The scale of the evening also appeared to affect her physically and emotionally. After moving through the audience from a secondary stage, Cyrus told the crowd that absorbing so much affection at once felt overwhelming. The admission gave the concert a more exposed quality than a routine pop comeback.
Parton’s influence remains central
Parton, who died in August at age 80, was both a family figure and a musical guide in Cyrus’ life. Their relationship had been visible for years through interviews, television appearances and shared performances, making the Hollywood Bowl remembrance especially resonant for longtime fans.
Cyrus also connected the venue itself to Parton, explaining that seeing her godmother perform there helped inspire the decision to take on the landmark stage. The tribute therefore sat at the center of the concert’s larger theme: a star returning to a huge audience while acknowledging the people and songs that shaped her.
A second sold-out Hollywood Bowl performance is scheduled for Sunday, October 18.
