New Girl creator Liz Meriwether says no reunion scripts exist, clarifying Max Greenfield’s comments ahead of a real cast gala appearance.

New Girl fans should not clear their calendars for a scripted reunion just yet. Series creator Liz Meriwether has directly pushed back on the idea that a comeback is already in development, saying there are currently no reunion scripts.

The clarification follows comments from Max Greenfield, who played Schmidt on the Fox comedy. During a July appearance on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle, Greenfield said a reunion was happening and joked that he had seen impressive scripts. His enthusiasm quickly fueled expectations that the loftmates might be heading back to television.

The cast reunion is real, but it is not a reboot

Meriwether addressed the speculation while attending an event for her newer series Furious. She treated the confusion with humor, noting that she does not have scripts for a New Girl return. The playful back-and-forth between creator and cast has become its own miniature reunion online, but it is not evidence of a commissioned episode, movie or new season.

Greenfield later clarified that he had mixed up two different kinds of reunion. He is set to join Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Lamorne Morris, Hannah Simone and Damon Wayans Jr. at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball in Los Angeles on October 10. The group will receive the Rising Phoenix Award, with Greenfield serving as host.

The honor recognizes the show’s theme of starting over and the people who help make new beginnings possible. That makes the charity event a meaningful gathering for the cast, though it remains separate from any screen project.

Why the rumor caught fire

New Girl ran for seven seasons from 2011 to 2018 and has maintained a devoted audience through streaming. Its ensemble chemistry—and a finale that left the characters with room for future stories—has made it a natural target for revival speculation in an era filled with sitcom returns.

Meriwether did not close the door forever. Instead, she drew a clear line around the present: there is no scripted reunion moving forward now. For viewers, the October gala offers a genuine chance to see much of the cast together again, but expectations should remain focused on the stage rather than a surprise return to the loft.
