Poorna Jagannathan explains Zoe Macon’s Manhunter reveal as Lanterns Episode 5 pushes John Stewart toward a defining decision.

Spoiler warning: This article discusses major events from Lanterns Episode 5, “Lights Out.”

Lanterns has resolved one of its season-long mysteries, revealing the full stakes behind Poorna Jagannathan’s Zoe Macon. The fifth episode confirms Zoe as the Manhunter hiding in Rushville, then turns that discovery into a destructive confrontation that changes John Stewart’s relationship with the Green Lantern ring.

Zoe’s secret changes the Rushville mystery

Jagannathan said she did not know Zoe’s true identity when she auditioned and learned the answer only after receiving a later script. That secrecy helped her play Zoe first as a seemingly human outsider rather than signaling the character’s mechanical origins too early.

Episode 5 expands the bargains Zoe has made with people across Rushville. Her advanced technology has healed residents and helped the town prosper, but that protection comes with an expectation: when danger arrives, the community must protect her in return. Jagannathan described the arrangement as a Faustian exchange driven by Zoe’s programming to survive.

The actor also emphasized that Zoe is not presented as emotionless. Although the Guardians regard the Manhunters as war criminals, Zoe has developed attachments to the town and to John, played by Aaron Pierre. Her ability to offer safety while calculating how each person can preserve her life gives the character both sympathy and menace.

John Stewart makes a defining choice

The conflict reaches its breaking point after Zoe heals John from severe burns and tries to secure his protection. John ultimately refuses the deal and kills her, choosing the mission over their connection. In the aftermath, he takes Hal Jordan’s ring but then leaves it behind, ending the episode with his future as a Green Lantern newly uncertain.

Jagannathan said Zoe’s final reaction reflects recognition that John is the first person whose moral judgment she could not predict or control. That interpretation reframes the episode’s brutal ending as more than a simple hero-versus-villain victory.

“Lights Out” is now streaming on HBO Max. With three episodes left in the season, the series has closed the immediate Manhunter mystery while opening larger questions about the Guardians, Hal’s decisions and whether John will accept the power he spent so long pursuing.
