RuPaul’s Drag Race UK will leave the BBC after its eighth series, ending the competition show’s run on the public broadcaster but not the British edition itself. Future installments are expected to move to WOW Presents Plus, the streaming platform operated by producer World of Wonder.

The franchise is moving, not disappearing

The BBC confirmed the change while pointing to significant financial pressure and the difficult programming decisions that have followed. World of Wonder, meanwhile, described the move as the beginning of a new era. The shift will also cover the related RuPaul’s Drag Race UK vs the World format, according to the BBC.

That distinction matters for viewers: the broadcaster has declined to renew the program for another BBC run, but the producer intends to continue it behind a dedicated streaming subscription. Details about the next season’s launch date, cast and release schedule were not included in the announcements.

Eight series changed the UK drag landscape

Launched in 2019, the British version adapted the familiar challenge-and-elimination format around a distinctly local drag tradition. RuPaul leads the judging panel alongside Michelle Visage, Graham Norton and Alan Carr, with celebrity guests joining across the series. At its peak, the show averaged roughly 1.5 million viewers per episode, the BBC reported.

The program also helped introduce performers including Danny Beard, Tia Kofi and La Voix to larger television audiences. Its visibility extended beyond weekly entertainment: the show became a prominent showcase for British drag and a recurring part of LGBTQ+ popular culture.

The decision arrives as the BBC works through a wider savings program valued at £500 million. Other entertainment titles have also been affected by recent cuts, making Drag Race UK part of a broader reshaping of the broadcaster’s schedule rather than an isolated cancellation.

For fans, the practical consequence is a change in destination. BBC Three and BBC iPlayer carried the show during its public-broadcast era; the next chapter is set to sit with the company that produces the franchise. That preserves the format, while changing how British viewers will access one of the country’s most visible reality competitions.
