Milcho Manchevski’s Sister Brother Manhole Cover has won the Tokyo Grand Prix, the top prize at the 39th Tokyo film festival.

Milcho Manchevski’s Sister Brother Manhole Cover has won the Tokyo Grand Prix, the top award at the 39th Tokyo International Film Festival. The Macedonian filmmaker’s latest feature led the closing-night honors after competing against 14 other titles in the festival’s main section.

A dark comedy rooted in Skopje

The film follows a brother and sister who survive by stripping and selling metal from the streets of post-Communist Skopje. Their precarious routine changes when an injury pushes them into contact with the city’s criminal underworld. The story has been described as a comic allegory, using the siblings’ increasingly dangerous situation to explore a society shaped by scarcity and transition.

The Tokyo Grand Prix, formally known as the Governor of Tokyo Award, also carries a cash prize of 3 million yen, reported at roughly $19,000. The victory gives the film a prominent international platform as it moves beyond its festival debut and seeks wider distribution.

Manchevski returns to a familiar festival

Manchevski has a prior relationship with Tokyo. His film Kaymak appeared at the festival in 2022, and his return with Sister Brother Manhole Cover has now produced the event’s highest competitive honor. The director has long worked across Macedonian and international cinema, making the award a notable new chapter in that career.

This year’s festival opened on October 26 and concluded with its awards ceremony in Tokyo. The Grand Prix result stood out as the clearest endorsement from the competition jury, elevating a film centered on two marginal characters and a highly specific urban reality.

For the production, the prize can be more than a ceremonial milestone. Major festival awards often help independent films attract sales interest, secure additional screenings and reach critics in new markets. Sister Brother Manhole Cover now leaves Tokyo with both a financial award and a strong credential for the next stage of its international run.
